A cosmetic dentist is a great resource to utilize when looking to improve the appearance of teeth that are in bad shape. They can perform dental restoration procedures to improve both the aesthetic and function of damaged or missing teeth. Underneath the umbrella of dental restorations happens to be a number of procedures, ranging from dental fillings to implants. The chosen restoration will dictate how long the procedure takes.

How long do dental restoration procedures take?

Below is an overview of how long certain dental restoration procedures can take. This information can be helpful for those considering or preparing for a restoration from a cosmetic dentist.

Dental restorations from a cosmetic dentist

Cosmetic dentists perform dental restorations for patients, with a goal of improving their aesthetic. Additionally, they ensure that the dental restoration improves function. There is a common misconception that a cosmetic dentist only performs procedures to improve form, however, they also make an effort to ensure good function and oral health. A cosmetic dentist is a dental professional who studied and trained in general dentistry but underwent additional education in cosmetic dentistry to learn more about improving the appearance of the gums and teeth. Because cosmetic dentists have a background in general dentistry, they can perform procedures such as dental restorations.

The average dental restoration procedure

A dental restoration procedure is done in order to improve a tooth that is in bad shape. When undergoing a dental restoration in cosmetic dentistry, the goal is typically to improve and restore the appearance of a tooth that is in bad shape. A cosmetic dentist can perform the following dental restoration procedures:

  • Dental fillings using composite resin. General dentists offer fillings in gold, metal and composite resin; however, most cosmetic dentists only offer them in composite resin because the color is white, thus allowing for an improvement in the way the tooth appears.
  • Dental crowns made of composite resin, ceramic or porcelain. Again, general dentists offer crowns in gold, metal alloys, porcelain, ceramic and composite resin. However, a cosmetic dentist relies on the latter three options because they are all white in color, thus allowing for a clean restoration.
  • Dental implants can be used in conjunction with other prosthetics to restore teeth that are in bad shape. The difference with implants is that the cosmetic dentist would have to perform an extraction of the damaged tooth, unless it was already missing.

A cosmetic dentist can perform a dental filling procedure in one appointment that does not extend past an hour and a half. Dental crowns, on the other hand, typically require two appointments for the entire process to be complete. The first procedure involves removal of damaged areas and impressions, which usually takes up to two hours. The second appointment of crown placement is much quicker, taking less than an hour. If dental implants are chosen as the restoration choice, there will be at least four appointments, all of which may take up to two hours.
