Figuring Out How Many Teeth Whitening Treatments You Need

Teeth Whitening Houston, TX

Most patients only require one teeth whitening treatment session, although it may involve several applications of the bleaching agent. For at-home whitening kits, the process may involve wearing the whitening trays for up to two weeks. The best way to determine how many teeth whitening treatments you need is by visiting the dentist for a consultation.

Teeth whitening explained: How many treatments are necessary?

Every patient has a unique experience with professional teeth whitening. However, there are certain things you can expect throughout treatment. The following review highlights what professional teeth whitening is, the different options that are available, and how many treatments may be necessary to achieve ideal results.

What is professional teeth whitening?

Professional teeth whitening is an in-office procedure that involves isolating the teeth from the gums and applying a bleaching agent to the front visible surface. This improves the color shade of teeth to provide the patient with a bright smile, removing tough stains that naturally develop or form as a result of eating certain foods and improper hygiene. Professional teeth whitening may be available in the form of a take-home whitening kit as well.

Deciding between take-home kits and in-office whitening

The two primary options of teeth whitening are take-home whitening kits and in-office teeth whitening. With take-home teeth whitening, the patient follows the treatment plan provided by the dentist at home for approximately two weeks. With in-office teeth whitening, it involves a single dental visit that takes one to two hours to complete. Both have their advantages and disadvantages, although most dentists recommend in-office whitening over take-home kits so they can monitor the results and safety of the treatment.

What to expect during the treatment process

The treatment process for in-office teeth whitening involves using a lip retractor and protecting the gums with a dental dam. This allows the dentist to apply the whitening solution safely to the visible surface of teeth. A dental laser is then placed over the teeth to allow the peroxide to work quickly and effectively. This takes about 20 minutes, and the dentist can assess the results and determine if additional bleach applications are necessary.

How many teeth whitening treatments do I need?

Patients who choose in-office teeth whitening typically only need one visit per year (at most) to keep their teeth white all of the time. During each session, the dentist may apply several different coats of the bleaching agent, depending on the patient’s goals and the severity of the stains. It is not uncommon for patients to receive three or four coats of the bleaching agent. After treatment, patients can keep their smile bright and beautiful by practicing good oral hygiene and limiting consumption of foods and drinks that may contribute to teeth stains.
